While Syria’s Al-Qaeda branch HTS is currently attacking Kurdish cities and expanding its reign of terror, the German federal government is apparently preparing a diplomatic reception in Berlin for the notorious jihadist Ahmad al-Sharaa (known as Abu Mohammad al-Golani). According to media reports, Golani is scheduled to arrive in Germany on January 19.
Golani is responsible for the gravest crimes. During his one-year leadership, minorities such as Alawites, Druze, and Kurds were persecuted and massacred. The fact that he now wears a suit and tie does not change his bloody record Nevertheless, his rise to power has been politically supported by Western countries like the USA and the United Kingdom.
At the same time, reactionary regional states like Turkey are attempting, with HTS’s help, to destroy the democratic self-administration in northern and eastern Syria. Their goal is the destruction of the Rojava revolution – a project that stands for grassroots democracy, women’s liberation, and social pluralism.
It was Kurdish and internationalist fighters who defeated the so-called “Islamic State” and protected Europe from further terror. Today, those very forces are being politically isolated, while jihadists are being normalized. This political double standard is a scandal.
We call on all progressive forces to take to the streets in Berlin on January 19 to defend the democratic rights and hopes of the peoples of Syria and to make it clear to both the federal government and Golani that Berlin does not tolerate murderers.
